It Couldn’t Be Done

What do you think can’t be done?
What’s holding you back?
Try again. Try again today.

 It Couldn’t Be Done
Poet: Edgar A. Guest

Somebody said that it couldn’t be done,
But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

Somebody scoffed: “Oh, you’ll never do that;
At least no one ever has done it”;
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat,
And the first thing we knew he’d begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
Without any doubting or quiddit,
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
There are thousands to prophesy failure;
There are thousands to point out to you, one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start to sing as you tackle the thing
That “cannot be done,” and you’ll do it.

Live it LOUD!

  1. Hey Rob,
    Thank you for the poem. I’ve read countless real life stories on how people get motivated and accomplish stuff just to prove someone wrong. It’s strange how humans sometimes operate.
    I enjoyed the poem. Cool stuff.
    Ciao,
    Derek

      Roll up the sleeves Baby!
      Derek you have a knack of commenting in places where no one before you dared. We’re related, I know it.
      It shows you got something going my friend…and I love it.

    Thanks! Am working on a doctoral and this poem reminds me of a quote that says ‘when they say you can’t, Smile and say “watch me!”

      Hey Mimi,

      Thanks for stopping by.
      Good call, although I’m not familiar with the other poem. It is amazing how much inspiration we can get from others.

    Rob,
    As usual, you hit the nail with that poem by Edgar A. Guest. Another to print and pin on my bulletin board over my desk.

      Hey Penelope,

      Edgar Guest knew all about motivational poetry writing. He has some good ones. As it goes, an entire writing may not inspire one, yet, there may be one small line that stands out.
      Glad you enjoyed.

    Poncho151500 on April 5, 2011 The only one who’s opinion matrets, is your own! Take what you will from others, but ultimately you choose what’s the best for yourself! And it’s so true that those who never fail, have never tried anything new. Failure is a learning process. People who fear it, don’t try anything different for fear of failing. But really, they’re just insecure with their own abilities. Don’t be afraid to fail! It’s a better teacher than any school! Don’t be afraid to try new things, it’s how you live!
